Go and modern AI

Before AI transformed science, Go was one of its defining grand challenges.

2016 — AlphaGoDeepMind’s system defeated a professional Go player, marking a landmark in artificial intelligence.

2017–18 — AlphaZeroA more general self-learning system mastered Go, chess and shogi from rules and self-play.

2020 onward — AlphaFoldDeepMind applied AI to a different grand challenge: predicting protein structures and accelerating biological research.
